Instructions for Scrappy Quilts

Instructions for Scrappy Quilts

The quilts are made to a finished size of approximately 50" x 70".  We would like to make them from strips....Yes, this is a great way for the quilters to use up their scraps!

We are making 10" blocks.  5 across and 7 down using a 1/4 inch seam allowance.  No border, just binding and the binding can be done on the machine.  If you do not quilt and just want to make the top you may do so and send the top to Sharon for her to quilt and bind.  If you are part of a sewing or quilt guild I hope that you will quilt and bind your tops as this will help us out tremendously.

The blocks are going to be strips of various widths sewn diagonally on a foundation piece.  We've been using muslin as the foundation piece but since it won't be seen you could really use any piece of 10 x 10 cotton.  We have found that 5 or 6 strips makes the best block - otherwise it starts to look very "busy".

Please choose your blocks with either a girl or boy in mind.  Try to coordinate the colors in your block too.

*****  Please use 12 solid color blocks (no strips) in various spots on the top.  This should also help to break up the busy-ness.  Sew that solid block onto a muslin foundation so we have the same thickness throughout but use less than the standard 1/4 inch seam allowance so we can hide that when we put them together.

Check out some of the pictures so you see what they look like.  Feel free to email Sharon with any questions.
